FREE LEAFLET on Papular Dermatitis: download (.PDF 360Kb)
Papular dermatitis (PD) is a term for a rash of small raised red spots occasionally detected in live pigs, but these skin lesions are most often noticed when pig carcases are inspected at the abattoir - they become more obvious after going through the scalding tank. Often they are caused by a hypersensitivity reaction (similar to an allergy) to Sarcoptic mange mites (Sarcoptes scabei).

Production Diseases in Farm Animals
Includes CD of Proceedings of International Conference on Production Diseases in Farm Animals
Infection and infectious diseases associated with livestock production Effects of dietary ß-glucans on nonspecific & specific immunity in weaners Effect of dietary ß-glucans on oxidative & antioxidative status & growth performance Influence of organic nutrition & housing on immune system & metabolism of finishing pigs Cow's colostrum feed additive in weaning diet improves gut health of piglets Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) in growing swine Alternatives to growth-promoting antibiotics & antibiotic feed additives Immune system activation increases tryptophan requirement of post-weaning pigs High producing farm animals are permanently challenged by a variety of factors: lack of proper nutrition (deficit/surplus), housing systems, infections and stress. The incidence, course and outcome of production diseases are changing continuously. Therefore, new information on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of production diseases is needed.
These problems are complicated by the discussion of animal welfare, the rapid changes in agricultural production and the economics of production. The following key topics are handled: alternatives to growth-promoting antibiotics; chronic inflammation and animal production; animal behaviour and welfare in intensive production systems; epidemiology of production diseases; new techniques in immunoprophylaxis; nutrition-immunology and production-immunology relationships; phosphorus nutrition - animal health and environmental concerns; application of genomics to production disease; role of specific fatty acids in animal health, reproduction, and performance; trace mineral nutrition and metabolism
