Readership:
Geneticists, animal health advisors, epidemiologists, parasitologists, students and researchers in animal breeding, genetics, or veterinary medicineBackground:
The first edition of this book, published in 1991, was based on a conference. However, this second edition consists of specially commissioned chapters to provide a more comprehensive and balanced review of the subject. Two additional editors, Stephen Bishop from the world-famous Roslin Institute, and Frank Nicholas, author of a widely respected textbook on veterinary genetics, have been brought in, as have several new contributors.Scope:
Breeding for disease resistance (rather than controlling diseases with expensive chemicals) continues to be topical. With a growing interest in sustainable livestock farming, this book will attract wide interest. There is full coverage of important areas of development, by leading international experts. Recent advances in the genetics of resistance to Spongiform encephalopathies (BSE, Scrapie) are included. Breeding sheep resistent to scrapie is now well advanced.Content:
Animal breeders and veterinarians have become increasingly interested in breeding strategies aimed at improving disease resistance in farm animals, as this lessens farmers' dependence on the use of drugs at a time when there is concern about their high usage in animals to be used for food products. There has also been concern at the level of drug resistance now shown by many disease organisms, and the cost of veterinary drugs in developing countries. This book consists of 27 chapters by leading international research workers from the UK, USA, Canada, Europe, Africa and Australasia reviewing our current knowledge in this area. Includes key advances such as breeding:
- cattle resistant to mastitis
- pigs resistant to E. coli or Salmonella
- sheep resistant to footrot, Maedi-Visna or scrapie
- parasite resistance in all species
- increased immune competence in all species
- lameness resistance in all species
Criticism?
The book is rich in technical jargon. Absence of a glossary is a serious omission when bringing together such diverse highly technical subjects.Ordering this book (Amazon pages): UK (delivers to Europe) Canada USA (ships to all countries)
