Ten years after the enforcement of nation-wide vaccination since 1984, the
universal vaccination has been proved to be a successful method to control
HBV infection in a high-prevalent endemic area, and also the mortality
from HCC in childhhood has decreased.
A total of 1,515 children under the age of 12 years were enrolled in this
study. The overall prevalence rate of serum HBsAg significantly decreased
from 9.8 % in 1984 to 1.3 % in 1994
(Chen,H-L;JAMA; 276:906, 1996). The corresponding rate of mortality
from HCC also decreased
(Chang,M.H.:NEJM;336:1855, 1997).
