Taiwan was a high-prevalent endemic area of HAV infection with 95 % of
population having been infected with HAV before 15 years of age before
1981. In 1989, the infection rate of 15 years old dropped to 33 % and of
13 years old to 15 % in western plain region of Taiwan, however,
that of mountain region in eastern and central Taiwan remains as high as
before with 85 ~ 90 % infection rate of 7 ~ 14 years old. During those 8
years after 1981, the environmental sanitation in western plain region of
Taiwan had showed remarkable improvement. The eastern mountain region had
remained in poor sanitary environment during the same period. It has been
proven that good environmental sanitation and individual hygienic habit
would improve and eradicate the infection of HAV.
