Although the acute manifestations of influenza are usually self-limited, the cough
is often severe and protracted. The disease is more severe and prolonged in older
individuals. They tend to develop bacterial pneumonia, particularly in those with
cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Primary viral pneumonia may occur but rather
uncommon. Reyes syndrome is an important complication of influenza in children who
are taking aspirin for fever or for other therapy. This disease involves the CNS and
liver, more frequent with influenza B than influenza A.
