David graduated from Cambridge in 1969 and was the first to identify the cause of swine dysentery in 1971 while researching his PhD. He was appointed Lecturer in Veterinary Microbiology at Glasgow University Veterinary School in 1972 and has since been researching into bacterial diseases of the pig and other species. In 1999 he was appointed Professor of Veterinary Bacteriology and Public Health in the Universty of Glasgow.
