Kidney lesions - What is your diagnosis?
(photo courtesy of L.D.Sims)
the kidney is pale & swollen with pinpoint scattered dark red spots
Answer
The dark red spots are petechial haemorrhages (petechiae) in the glomeruli, resulting in the classical "turkey egg" appearance. There is likely to be acute glomerulitis, as found in a variety of bacterial & viral septicaemias and in purpura haemorrhagica.
Differential diagnosis:
* PDNS *
* acute salmonellosis *
* purpura haemorrhagica *
* acute classical swine fever (hog cholera) *
* acute African swine fever *
* acute erysipelas (Erysipelothrix infection)
* acute septicaemias: e.g. systemic Pasteurella infection or colisepticaemia
