Background:
The increasing application of science to animal breeding and production is raising ethical concerns in many countries in an era when public caring and spiritual values are widely rising.
This book originated in a special symposium held at the VIII World Congress on Animal Production (June 1998) in Korea but additional chapters have been specially commissioned to provide a more comprehensive and balanced account.
Scope:
Ethical, political and trade issues in how we treat farm animals have become headline news!
This book is a vital step forwards in marshalling our approach to very difficult and contentious issues for society at the turn of the millenium. The cloning of sheep, the use of animal organs (xenotransplants) for humans, bovine & porcine somatotrophin and BSE are all examples of how livestock production is related to food safety, human health, ethics and quality of life. The book also boldly addresses ethical issues in the relationship between intensive developed-world animal production and third world development.
Although the authors do not specifically use the term "Quality Assurance" (QA) this is very much the issue that it raises for livestock production industries. The book serves as an excellent introduction to QA. Quality Assurance is a major emerging trend in the production and marketing of farm animal products worldwide.
Content:
An impressive array of international experts thoughtfully review the formidable range of ethical dilemmas that are troubling society as a consequence of half a century of unprecedented technological development and technical innovation in livestock farming. They carefully consider the variety of means by which highly emotive, yet economically and practically significant questions can be approached in a way that is sensitive to the range of feelings, perceptions and values that different sectors of society hold.
As "Quality Assurance" (QA) marketing schemes blossom around the agricultural world, this book is an excellent review of consumer concerns that QA schemes can usefully address.
at a crucial time of intense debate (and often polarised opinion) this book is the vital map that we need in order to understand where we have come from and what choices lie before us!
